For the 13th year running UCOL photography students take out the NZIPP student photographer of the year. We are proud of our student’s hard work and the effort they put into the awards. For the last two years the level of work from other institutes has been very strong and the battle for first place is becoming stronger. This is exciting and invigorating as we have nail biting finishes to the awards evening.
UCOL students overall won 41 medals out of the 64. Staff also did very well and received medals for their work of excellence. Graduate, Kelvin Gilbert (of 2 years) rocked with receiving his Grand Masters in 3 years, which is unheard of (of which there are only 11 NZ )…so go Kelvin – we are so proud of you as well.
During the break a small group of first year Diploma in photographic Imaging students took part in a hands on still life workshop. The aim was to create a classic painterly aesthetic using the modern LED lighting in a studio environment.
Have a look at this link, it shows the whole process … awesome https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqcE5YOLhsk
New technology purchased for Music team, thanks to faculty. MPC touch & Roland SPD/SX (Drum Triggers) Instrument recording, looping, isolation and playback technology purchased for Wairarapa was brought over to PN for Staff and students (2 more units are in the pipeline , one for each of PN and Whanganui). Students and staff worked together in a workshop format to demonstrate the technology and its parameters. All were very impressed with capabilities and the students are pleased to be able to use technology that is current industry standard in bands. Excellent confirmation of appropriate monetry and technological investment.
Packing the vans and checking the final paperwork for the NZIPP trip. These students will be at the conference for 5 days. Working in the background of the print judging , this is an experience of the industry the students never forget. The days are long, the images amazing and they meet their heroes in the Industry. For their free labour they get to go to the conference (valued at about $500 per entry) for free and are able to listen and engage with international speakers, national photographers and learn soon much. On Thursday the student print judging category will be live streamed to UCOL thanks to Michael, our video/photo lecturer on site at NZIPP- running the student journey this year…go team … and hood luck
This is the pile of print cases being taken to the NZIPP conference for our students this year. NZIPP award judging start on Thursday. The whole photo team are able to go this year due to the awards being in Wellington, and during student break time. This means we don’t have to cover teaching and can take a group of students down at quite reasonable costings for them and us.
Students from both campuses Auckland and Palmerston North have entered this year …..90 entires all up. Last year other institutes were stepping up and producing some amazing works, so this year it will be a hard fought competition …….. all the more exciting…let the judging begin …….
UCOL ran a fun ideas for courses and one of our Alumni came up with this…. I think it is the best out, especially with the graphics!
